Oxford native, London based producer Chesslo Junior is currently making a name for himself in quite possibly the most musically competitive city in the UK. Despite only recently stepping on the gas in the last year or so, having decided to take his music career more seriously, Chesslo has already come up trumps with his mellow funky Hip-Hop style. It is his evident extensive knowledge of music, which he excersizes in this live mix, that makes Junior such an interesting producer. Tracks like 'Other Place','Rohtang Pass' and the popular 'Carcassone' provide a good example of the funky Hip Hop style I'm referring too, they provide a relaxed 'bop - your - head' vibe combined with the pleasures of stimulating electronic sounds, which, in this case, is definitely a winning combination. As well as this, the 20 year old beat smith boasts versatility in his music with the ability to change up his style with equal success. His recent 'No Sleep', which is a dreamy combination of vocal samples deep underlying bass and distant clappy beats, for me provides the perfect example of what Chesslo Junior really has to offer. How and when did you start making music?
like 4 years ago, starting using cubase with mates just messing around.
Who do you consider your biggest influences to be?
Producers like 40, Pharell, Kanye always influenced me alot, I like to try get a little bit of that sound into the music I make.
What sort of set up do you use to make music and do you have a specific process you usually go through when making a tune?
I just use my computer, I got an old evolution midi controller when i was like 16 that's still going strong. Just picked up an mpd24 for the live stuff. jump on my housemates krks when i need to mix stuff down! I don't really have a specific process for making tunes, normally just start with like a general feel that I wanna make and go from there.
When playing live what sort of equipment do you use/dream of having one day?
I use ableton and an mpd 24 live. the only thing I really would wanna do live is work with other artists in a like a live setting, something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxhMI8Y3Pyg
If you could work with any other artist who would it be, and why?
If it's any other artist at the moment it probably b someone Da$h or someone like that, I rate the beats he gets on. Or maybe lil B
Favourite producer to look out for in the next year?
Deft, JJ mumbles, Charo. Wotnot music all day.
